Mental Health America of Greater Houston is pleased to recognize the passion and outstanding contributions in women’s health and mental health of Lucy J. Puryear, M.D.
A two-term board director at Mental Health America of Greater Houston, Dr. Puryear is credited as a founding member and inaugural chair of the Yates Children Memorial Fund for Women’s Mental Health Education at Mental Health America of Greater Houston.
Recognized as a national expert in mental health, a few of her accolades include Texas Monthly’s “Super Doc,” H Texas Magazine’s “Best Doctors in Houston,” and “Best Doctors for Women,” as well as “Best Doctors in America.”
Dr. Puryear is an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in The Menninger Department of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine, and serves as medical director of The Women’s Place – Center for Reproductive Psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital and co-director of The Menopause Center at Texas Children’s Pavilion for Women. She holds the Maureen Hackett Endowed Chair for Reproductive Psychiatry at Texas Children’s Hospital, and is a Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame inductee.
Dr. Puryear has educated and informed other health professionals and lay persons through numerous lectures, articles in national newspapers and magazines including, The New York Times, O Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, Good Housekeeping, and Newsweek, and in television appearances including The Today Show, Good Morning America, and Prime Time Live.
Dr. Puryear is also a respected author of the book, Understanding Your Emotions When You’re Expecting: Emotions, Mental Health, and Happiness – Before, During, and After Pregnancy.
